GWON Doyeon studied literature in university, and then majored in photography in graduate school. The artist employs photography as a tool to explore the relationships between knowledge and memory, visual images and languages. He has had solo exhibitions, including Flashbulb Memory (Gallery Lux, Seoul, 2018), The Art of the Shovel (KT&G Sangsangmadang, Seoul, 2015), and Traveller Novice (Gallery Ryugaheon, Seoul 2011), and has participated in many group exhibitions, including FotoFest Biennial (US), PHotoESPAÑA Biennial (Spain), Daegu Photo Biennale (South Korea), GoEun Museum of Photography, Seoul Museum of Art. He has received the Sajin Bipyong (Photography Criticism) Award (2011), has been selected as a finalist for the 7th KT&G Sangsangmadang SKOPF (2015), was included in the British Journal of Photography’s “Ones to Watch” (2016), and Fotofest Biennale (2018).
During his time at Incheon Art Platform, he will collect and construct images of disturbed ecosystems in the Gyeongin Ara Waterway located on the west side of Incheon. Inspired by the cultural anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss’ concept of remote observation—in other words, the concept of gaining perspective of a subject as we distance ourselves from it—through photography, the artist will restructure the geopolitical/ecological relationships of the space and creatures of the Ara Waterway.
