LEE Josef Sungeun majored in mechanical engineering at Yonsei University. He produces interactive installations using technologies such as virtual reality, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). The artist suffers from Narcolepsy, an incurable nervous system disease that makes him suddenly fall asleep at any time during his daily life. This often leads to confusion as to what is dream or reality. The artist connects this in his practice, and produces work that experiments with observation and scientific methods in order to find evidence of reality. This experiment also becomes a question for people, while it borrows the form of art. The artist plans to educate Korean society on the issues of Narcolepsy. Furthermore, he wishes to raise empathy towards those suffering from nervous system/mental illness. Narcolepsy is not well known in Korean society. In a competitive Korean society in particular, social judgments such as being lazy, or lacking will for example, often make it difficult for those who are suffering from Narcolepsy to live properly as a member of the society.
During the residency, the artist is planning to organize work that depicts his personal experiences with Narcolepsy, interviews and medical information, and conduct research and workshops regarding social and cultural policies.
